Thinking about buying a new chandelier? Fabulous! Let us help you!
#1- Make sure it's the right size.
It really sucks when it's too small and we see this more often than not. So... here's what you do:
Diameter- Determine the size by adding the width of the room to the length of the room in feet. Then, convert to inches for the chandelier diameter. For instance, a 10 ft x 20 ft room would require a chandelier with a diameter of 30 inches.
Height- In a room with 8 ft ceilings, chandeliers are normally hung about 30 to 32 inches above the table. For every additional foot of ceiling, raise the fixture 3 inches. If it's being hung over a center island it's 36 inches above the surface and make sure it/they won't be in the way of any cabinet doors.
This is your standard rule and it's okay to break them now and then so know this: It's okay to go bigger just don't go smaller than this number :) Unless you are clustering multiple fixtures.
#2- Install a dimmer. Do not consider this an option.
Ofcourse, our dining room is about more than a table and chairs. It's about friends, family, food, and drinks. How can we have a dining experience under high school cafeteria or VFW lighting? I dread the thought! If nothing else please install dimmers! Your guests will look and feel better and your food will look more appetizing.
#3- They don't have to match from room to room.
You want your rooms to have flow. This just means that they need to compliment each other. As you wouldn't put the same furniture in the living room as you would a dining room. It's sorta' like that with light fixtures. Try to avoid matchy-matchy at all costs.
#4- Consider hanging more than one.
